The reason of the fluctuation of pottery production establishments in the period 2001-2009 is due to rapid urbanization, small production units had not premises to expand production. Besides, after the planning of the development of Dong Nai ceramic arts is approved, units have to improve their technology from burning wood to using gas, oil or using coal gasification technology to reduce environmental pollution. In fact, units that produce small ceramic products can fire by gas, and ceramic products made from red or black soil are suitable for wood stove. Also, in the process of implementing the planning, the progress of infrastructure investment of Tan Hanh ceramics group is slow, pottery production units cannot move out of residential areas. Due to the above reasons, some units have diverted their investment or change the production area to another province.
Most of the ceramics enterprises in Dong Nai are small-scale businesses, in the period 2001-2006 the activity of the majority of businesses operating in the ceramic industry is not effective compared with the period 1996-2000, the period 2007-2009 ceramics industry continued to meet with difficulties due to the effects of the economic decline, leading to the decrease of sector growth compared to the plan target.
Currently, the ceramics manufacturing units are difficult: Firstly, the capital, due to the majority of the ceramics manufacturing units’ assets (land, machinery, equipment ...) are not eligible for mortgage loan, so the loan of enterprises is limited; Secondly, the premises, due to previous production environment is households, the ceramics units are concentrated in Bien Hoa, a class II city, it is very difficult in expanding production. Planning to move ceramics units is aimed at both creating premises and ensuring environment due to the change of burning technology. However, the investment in infrastructure Tan Hanh ceramic cluster development within limits opportunities for business. Thirdly, the market, due to ceramics manufacturing units in Dong Nai are mainly small and medium establishments, their competitiveness is not high, lack of linkage, cooperation, and assignment, always occurs the rival of buying, selling, copying designs, this leads to enterprises do not trust each other. Fourthly, creating news designs, at present, most of businesses produce models through the exhibition, there is no creativity. The design of new styles in ceramic arts units is still manual, not utilize the capability of the science and technology application, there is no research center for creating new models. Fifthly, human resource, not only the lack of skilled labor but also manual labor for training, due to young workers today tend not to participate in this industry. On the other hand, the training of human resource in recent years have limitations, there is no training for ceramics industry. At present, Dong Nai College of Decorative Arts only trains for arts design. Thus, the demand for skilled labor responding to industry is extremely difficult, not ensuring for the long-term development.
To continue the restoration and development of pottery village of Dong Nai province, there are many issues to resolve immediately and long-term such as the production facilities and the work of training workers, technological innovation, reorganizing production in accordance with new situation, diversification of products with many different types of pottery, and looking to expand markets in the economic integration. To implement better the above problems, ceramic arts of Dong Nai industry needs timely support from related departments to implement programs such as industrial promotion, vocational training, science and technology consultancy, market development, support of science and technology to cleaner production, saving and production link... Besides, units manufacturing ceramics must be more dynamic, active, and creative to response to the new situation. (Translated by Hong Chau - SCT News)
